Flood, vulnerability and urban resilience: a real-time study of local recovery following the floods of June 2007 in Hull (2007-2009)

Funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), EPSRC and the Environment Agency, this project is a response to the events of June 2007 in Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire which exposed the vulnerability of urban communities in the face of major flood events. The initial impact in the Humber region was superficially documented by the media. However the extended process of physical, social and personal recovery from the flood experience did not make headlines as local people, key agencies and government departments sought to re-establish the social and physical fabric of affected local communities. ESRC Hull Children's Flood Project
The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) have worked with Lancaster University, The Environment Agency and Hull City Council to conduct a study titled "Children, Flood and Urban Resilience: Understanding children and young people's experience and agency in the flood recovery process".

Relatively few accounts of flooding consider the perspectives of children and young people and the role they might play in building future resilience. Nevertheless, a vital part of building resilience should take account of children’s perspectives since they are not only community members, but also citizens of the future. Funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, the Environment Agency and Hull City Council, this project engaged with children and young people in Hull to learn about their experiences of flood, flood recovery and the implications for future resilience.
